The M-1 management procedure requires that only persons with military experience in the applicable disciplines are recruited for training as armed onboard security personnel. The recruiting procedure is documented for consistency and included in the ISO9001:2008 quality management manuals and meets the LRQA [UKAS]Security Management System for Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel Onboard Ships.

The first phase in the recruitment is the vetting of documents and on successful acceptance of the basic documentation the applicant is interviewed for suitability and thereafter trained to meet M-1 standards of competency before final acceptance into the roster. The ISPS Code, Rules on the Use of Force and Fire Arms, the ICoC Code, Social Conduct On-board are some of the areas of emphasis addressed in addition to their familiarizations with weapons complete with competency certification, associated non lethal kit and first aid with preference for First Person on Scene training when functioning as a M-1 Team Leader.
